Alexandrian senna and Tinnevelly senna are the two traditional trade names for senna, named after the places they were shipped from. Alexandrian senna came down the Nile from Sudan and Egypt and left through the port of Alexandria. Tinnevelly senna came from Tirunelveli in South India. Today most of the senna in world trade is grown in India, and buyers mostly meet the two names in pharmacopoeia standards, where they still mark a real difference in the pods.
Where the two names come from
For centuries senna reached European pharmacies from two directions. Wild senna gathered in Sudan and Upper Egypt was traded through Alexandria, and became known as Alexandrian senna. Cultivated senna from the dry south of India, grown around Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, became Tinnevelly senna. The plants are close relatives, and many botanists now treat them as one species with regional forms. The trade kept both names anyway, because leaf from each region looked and behaved a little differently.
How they differ for a buyer
| Alexandrian senna | Tinnevelly senna | |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional origin | Sudan and Egypt | South India |
| How it is grown | Mostly gathered wild | Farmed |
| Leaflets | Smaller, more pointed, greyer green | Larger, longer, yellow green |
| Pods | Broader, flatter | Longer, narrower |
| Pod strength standard | Higher minimum in the European Pharmacopoeia | Lower minimum, separate standard |
| Supply today | Smaller and less steady | Large and reliable |
For leaves, the European Pharmacopoeia covers both under one standard. For pods it keeps two separate standards, one for Alexandrian and one for Tinnevelly, and sets a higher minimum strength for the Alexandrian pods. So a drug maker working to the European standard needs to know which pod it is buying. A tea brand usually cares far more about the cut and the colour than about the trade name.
Why most senna today is Indian
Farmed senna gives a steadier supply than wild harvest. India has grown senna as a field crop for generations, first around Tirunelveli and later across the dry regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat. That scale is why Indian senna now supplies most of the world’s tea brands and herbal medicine makers. Buyers abroad still often call any Indian senna Tinnevelly senna, even when the leaf was grown in Rajasthan, because the name has become shorthand for Indian origin.
Choosing between them
For most tea and herbal products, Indian senna is the practical choice, because it is easier to source in volume and to keep consistent from one order to the next. For a medicine written to a set standard, the standard decides. If your formula names Alexandrian pods, you need pods that meet that standard. If it names Tinnevelly pods or simply senna leaf, Indian senna to the right grade is what you need. Our guide to senna leaves vs senna pods covers the choice between leaf and pod.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Alexandrian and Tinnevelly senna?
Mainly origin and appearance. Alexandrian senna traditionally came from Sudan and Egypt, Tinnevelly senna from South India. For pods, the European Pharmacopoeia sets separate standards and a higher minimum strength for Alexandrian pods.
Which senna is stronger?
Alexandrian pods are held to a higher minimum strength in the European standard. For leaves, both meet the same standard, and strength depends more on the lot than on the name.
Is Tinnevelly senna the same as Indian senna?
Yes, in practice. The name came from Tirunelveli, but buyers now use it for Indian senna generally, including senna grown in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Do you supply Alexandrian senna?
We supply Indian senna leaves and pods to BP, USP and EP grades. Tell us the standard your product needs and we will confirm the match.
What is the minimum order for senna leaves or pods?
100 kg. A free sample with its test report goes out before the first order.
