Who sources this ingredient
Root powder and extract at 2.5% or 5% withanolides
Root powder is the traditional form and is bought by the tonne for Ayurvedic formulation and for capsules where the whole root is the point. Extract standardised to 2.5% or 5% withanolides by HPLC is what most Western supplement brands mean when they say ashwagandha, because a label claim needs a number behind it. The two are different purchases at different prices. Our MOQ on this line is 25 kg rather than the 100 kg most of the catalog carries, which makes a first trial order genuinely small.
Withanolides, withaferin A, and root versus leaf
Withanolides are the marker group and withaferin A is the individual compound most often named in a specification. The assay is by HPLC and the figure is stated per lot. One thing worth settling early: we supply ROOT, which is what most pharmacopeial and supplement specifications call for. Leaf material carries a different and generally higher withanolide reading, and a supplier quoting an unusually high number at an unusually low price is often quoting leaf. Ask, and check the part used on the COA.
