Senna leaves quality cannot be judged from colour or price alone. A bulk buyer needs three things to agree: the approved sample, the written specification and the results for the lot being shipped. If one of those is missing, “export grade” is only a label.
The first inspection is still useful. It tells you whether a lot deserves lab work. It does not replace the lab work.
Start with identity and plant part
Write the plant identity and the part used into the specification. Leaves and pods trade separately, and a leaf order should not arrive diluted with excess stem. The sample, packing label and batch report should all identify the same material.
This sounds basic, but it prevents an expensive kind of ambiguity. “Senna powder” could mean milled leaf, milled pod or an extract powder. Those are different purchases.
What visual inspection can tell you
Spread a representative sample on a clean, pale surface. Check the leaf colour, visible stem, dust, grit, other plant material and signs of damp storage. Then compare it with the approved sample under similar light.

Green leaf is a useful first screen because drying and storage affect appearance. It is not a universal grade. A clean-looking sample can still miss a buyer’s moisture, microbial or pesticide limits.
Put measurable checks in the specification
The World Health Organization’s quality-control methods for herbal materials cover identity, foreign matter, moisture, ash and other tests used to assess plant material. The exact acceptance limits come from the buyer’s market and product, but the method is the useful lesson: define the test and the limit before the shipment. See the WHO quality-control manual.
A practical senna leaf specification commonly covers:
- identity and part used;
- whole, broken, cut or powdered form;
- particle size where equipment depends on it;
- foreign matter and moisture;
- strength where the finished product requires it;
- microbial, pesticide and heavy-metal limits for the destination;
- packing, label and batch-document requirements.
Do not copy limits from an unrelated supplier’s sheet. A tea company, a powder blender and a pharmaceutical manufacturer do not necessarily accept the same specification.
Match the sample to the commercial lot
A sample is useful only when its identity follows into the order. Record the sample or lot reference, approve it against the written specification, and cite that approval on the purchase order. When the commercial lot arrives, match its batch number and documents before opening every bag.
Read the batch report with the material
A Certificate of Analysis should identify the lot and report the tests agreed for it. Check that the test names and units match your specification. A result without a method or a lot reference may not answer the purchasing question you asked.
The report also has limits. It describes the submitted sample. Your receiving process still needs to confirm the shipment identity, labels, bag condition and lot numbers. If a result is critical, decide in advance whether your own laboratory or a third party will perform release testing.
Cut size is a quality issue when machinery is involved
Whole leaf, fine cut, coarse cut and powder can all be good senna. The right grade is the one your process requires. A tea-bag line can reject clean material because the cut bridges in the hopper or passes through the filter paper. A powder line can struggle with an inconsistent grind.
Give the supplier a particle-size requirement or a sample of the grade that already runs. Approve it before the commercial lot is cut.
