Senna Tea: What It Does, and What It Does Not

Senna tea is a laxative in a teabag. Its one real benefit is short term relief of constipation, usually working 6 to 12 hours after you drink it. It is not a wellness tea, not a detox and not a weight loss drink, and treating it as any of those is where people get into trouble.

Search for senna tea benefits and you will find long lists covering digestion, detox, weight and skin. Only the first of those survives contact with the evidence.

What it does

Steeping senna leaf in hot water pulls out the same compounds used in pharmacy laxative tablets. They pass through the stomach unchanged, reach the colon, and are broken down there by gut bacteria. That triggers the colon to contract and holds more water in the stool. A bowel movement follows, typically overnight.

So the benefit is real and it is specific. It is the same benefit a senna tablet gives, delivered in a less precise form.

Tea versus tablets, and why the difference matters

This is the part most articles skip, and it is the practical difference.

A tablet contains a measured dose. A teabag contains a weight of leaf whose strength varies with the crop, and how much of it ends up in your cup depends on how long you steep it and how hot the water was. Steep it for two minutes and you get a mild effect. Leave the bag in for fifteen and you can get a much stronger one from the identical bag.

That variability is why cramping is more commonly reported with the tea than with tablets. People treat it like a normal herbal tea and let it sit.

Senna tea Senna tablets
Dose control Variable, depends on steeping Measured and consistent
Onset 6 to 12 hours 6 to 12 hours
Cramping reports More common Less common
Best for People who prefer a drink and a gentle start Anyone who wants a predictable dose
Brewing noteStart at two to three minutes, not the ten you might give a herbal infusion. You can always steep longer next time. You cannot undo a cup that was too strong once it is drunk.

The claims that do not hold up

Weight loss. Senna tea is heavily marketed this way and it does not work. What comes off is water and stool weight, and it returns as soon as you rehydrate. There is no effect on body fat. Used repeatedly for this it causes dehydration and low potassium, and it is the most common way people end up dependent on a laxative.

Detox. There is nothing to detoxify. The liver and kidneys do that job continuously. Emptying the colon does not clear toxins from the body.

Flat stomach or bloating tea. The same claim in softer language. Any flattening is the absence of stool, which is temporary by definition.

We supply senna to tea manufacturers, and we say this plainly because a brand that markets it honestly gets fewer complaints and stays out of regulatory trouble in the EU and the US.

Using it sensibly

Drink it in the evening, since it works overnight. Start with a short steep. Drink water through the following day, because it draws fluid into the bowel.

Use it occasionally rather than daily. The consistent guidance is not to use senna continuously beyond about two weeks without medical advice, because the bowel can become reliant on it. Full detail on the risks is in our note on senna tea side effects.

Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, giving it to a child, or on regular medication should ask a doctor first. It is not suitable for anyone with a bowel obstruction, appendicitis, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

What a tea manufacturer needs from the leaf

If you are blending senna into a tea product, three things decide whether it works commercially.

The cut. Tea bag cut is milled to a specific fineness so it flows through bag filling machines without dusting and without blocking. A cut and sifted grade will jam a filling line. This is the most common specification error we see from new tea buyers.

Consistent strength. Since the consumer controls the steep, the one variable you can control is what goes in the bag. A brand dosing to a consistent effect needs tested material lot by lot, not a brochure figure.

Clean paperwork. Pesticide residue and microbial limits to the standard of your destination market, plus origin documentation.

Sourcing senna for tea

We grow, process and export senna leaves and senna pods from Rajasthan. Senna is one of four lines we manufacture ourselves rather than buy from a market and resell, and we cut tea bag grade in our own plant, so the fineness is something we set rather than something we hope for.

Minimum order is 100 kg. Every lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis covering strength, moisture, ash, microbial and pesticide limits. Free sample before you order, quote back within 24 hours to your port, and we ship to tea companies and supplement manufacturers in more than 60 countries.

Specifications, for buyers who order to a number

Tea buyers order senna on cut fineness and on strength, with purity limits set by the destination market. Strength is confirmed on the Certificate of Analysis for your lot rather than quoted as a range, because it moves with crop and season and a consistent product has to be blended against the real figure. Send your standard and we will confirm what we can supply against it.

Frequently asked questions

What is senna tea good for?

Short term relief of constipation. That is its one evidence backed use. It works in roughly 6 to 12 hours, so it is normally drunk in the evening.

How long should I steep senna tea?

Two to three minutes to start. Longer steeping pulls out considerably more of the active compounds, and leaving the bag in for ten or fifteen minutes is the usual reason people get cramping.

Does senna tea help you lose weight?

No. The weight lost is water and stool, and it comes straight back. There is no effect on fat. Using it this way risks dehydration, low potassium and laxative dependence.

Can I drink senna tea every night?

Not as a habit. Guidance is not to use senna continuously past about two weeks without medical advice. If you need something nightly, speak to a doctor, because ongoing constipation has causes a laxative does not address.

Do you supply tea bag cut senna?

Yes, cut in our own plant to the fineness tea bag filling machines need. 100 kg minimum, Certificate of Analysis per lot, free sample and a quote within 24 hours.
