Sidr powder is a milled leaf used as a natural hair cleanser. It contains saponins, which foam gently and lift dirt and oil without stripping the scalp the way a strong detergent does. It cleans, softens and adds slip. It does not colour hair, and it is not a substitute for henna.
What sidr actually is
Sidr is the leaf of a thorny tree that grows across the Middle East, North Africa and parts of South Asia. It is also sold as nabk, and in some markets as lote leaf or jujube leaf.
The leaves are dried and milled to a fine green powder. Mixed with warm water they form a mucilaginous paste, slightly slippery, that has been used to wash hair across the Gulf and the Levant for centuries, long before bottled shampoo existed. In much of the region it is still the traditional wash, and it carries cultural and religious significance alongside the practical use.
What sidr powder for hair actually does
It cleans without stripping. Saponins are natural foaming compounds. They are far milder than sodium lauryl sulfate and similar detergents, so they remove oil and dirt while leaving more of the scalp’s own moisture in place. People with dry or sensitive scalps usually notice this first.
It conditions as it washes. The paste is naturally slippery and leaves a thin film on the strand. Hair comes out softer and easier to comb, which is unusual for a cleanser and is why sidr is often used on its own with no conditioner after.
It calms the scalp. Sidr has a long history of use against flaking and irritation, and users consistently report a calmer scalp and less itching. We describe that as traditional use and reported experience, because the clinical evidence is thin and a cosmetic brand should not be making treatment claims.
It adds body. The film it leaves gives fine hair a little more substance without the heaviness of a silicone conditioner.
What it does not do
It does not dye hair. Sidr is green in the packet and it rinses out clear, leaving no colour behind. That surprises people who expect it to behave like henna.
It does not lather like shampoo. Saponins foam, but lightly. Anyone equating suds with cleaning will think it has not worked. It has.
It does not regrow hair. Sidr is often listed under hair growth, and the honest version is that a healthier, less irritated scalp is a better environment for the hair you have. That is not the same as regrowth and should not be sold as it.
How it is used
Mix two to four tablespoons with warm water to a thin yoghurt consistency. Let it sit ten minutes so the leaf hydrates and turns slippery. Massage into wet scalp and hair, leave five to ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Rinsing is the step people underestimate. Sidr is a plant powder and grit will stay in thick hair if you hurry it. Rinse longer than feels necessary.
It is commonly blended, and the combinations are practical rather than decorative.
| Blend | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Sidr with hibiscus | Extra slip and conditioning |
| Sidr with amla | Adds shine, slightly more astringent |
| Sidr with shikakai or reetha | Stronger cleansing for oily scalps |
| Sidr before henna | Clean base so colour takes evenly |
What to check when you buy it
Sidr is graded mainly on how finely it is milled and how clean it is.
Sieve size. The most important spec. Coarse powder makes a gritty paste that will not rinse out. For cosmetic use you want it milled fine.
Leaf only. Cheaper material carries stem and twig, which mills coarse, dilutes the saponin content and shows up as grit.
Colour. Good sidr is a clear green. Brown or grey powder usually means old stock or poor drying.
Purity limits. Heavy metals and microbial counts to the standard of your market, since this goes on the scalp.
Sourcing sidr in bulk
We process and export sidr leaf powder as one of four lines we manufacture ourselves rather than buy in and resell. When a buyer asks whether we are the producer or an intermediary, on sidr the answer is that we are the producer.
We mill to cosmetic sieve grades from leaf only material. Minimum order is 100 kg. Every lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis covering sieve, moisture, heavy metals and microbial limits. Free sample before you order and a quote back within 24 hours to your port. Most of our sidr goes to the Gulf and to natural haircare brands in Europe and the US.
Specifications, for buyers who order to a number
Sidr is ordered on sieve or mesh, on moisture, and on the purity limits your market sets for a leave-on or rinse-off cosmetic. All are confirmed on the Certificate of Analysis for the lot you receive. Tell us the mesh your formulation needs and the standard you work to, and we will confirm what we can supply before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Does sidr powder colour hair?
No. It is green in the packet but rinses out clear and leaves no colour. If you want colour you need henna, indigo or both. Sidr is a cleanser.
Can sidr replace shampoo?
Yes, and that is its traditional use across the Gulf and North Africa. It foams lightly rather than heavily, so it feels different, but it cleans. Many people use it with nothing after it.
Is sidr good for dandruff?
It has a long history of use for flaking and irritation and users widely report improvement. We describe it as traditional use rather than a treatment, because the clinical evidence is limited and treatment claims create regulatory problems.
Can I use sidr with henna?
Yes, commonly as a wash before henna so the colour takes on clean hair. Do not mix them into one paste expecting both effects, since they do different jobs and work best in sequence.
What is the minimum order for bulk sidr powder?
100 kg. Tell us your mesh requirement and destination and we will send a free sample and a quote within 24 hours.
Specs change with the crop, the season and the grade. Ask our export desk for a current lab report, the minimum order and a price to your port, and we will come back within 24 hours.
