Sojat Henna Powder: Why One Town Supplies the World’s Henna

Sojat henna powder is henna grown and milled around Sojat, a small town in the Pali district of Rajasthan. Most of the henna traded in India, and a large share of the henna sold worldwide, starts here. Since September 2021, Sojat Mehndi has also carried a Geographical Indication, the same kind of protected origin name that Darjeeling tea has.

Why Sojat grows the world’s henna

Henna likes hard conditions. It grows best in hot, dry country on sandy, well drained soil, with one good monsoon followed by months of little rain, and the land around Sojat matches that almost exactly. Because the crop is mostly rain fed rather than irrigated, the leaf grows slowly and ripens under strong sun, and that slow ripening is what gives Sojat leaf its reputation for a deep, reliable stain.

Farmers here have grown henna for generations, and the town has built its whole trade around it. After harvest, leaf comes in from the surrounding villages to the local market, and dozens of mills in and around Sojat clean, grind and sieve it. A buyer who works with a Sojat mill is therefore close to every step that decides quality: the farm, the market where the leaf is graded, and the mill that turns it into powder.

What the GI tag means for buyers

A Geographical Indication ties a product name to the place it comes from. Sojat Mehndi was registered as a GI on 14 September 2021, under application 628 for agricultural goods. In plain terms, the name Sojat Mehndi is meant for henna that actually comes from the Sojat region.

For a buyer, that helps in two practical ways. It gives a brand a true origin story to print on the pack, which matters in markets where shoppers have learned that Rajasthani henna stains best. It also gives you a clear question to ask any supplier who uses the Sojat name, which is simply where their mill is. A trader in another state can certainly sell good henna, but if the pack says Sojat, the leaf should come from here.

From leaf to powder

Step What happens Why it matters
Harvest Main cutting after the monsoon, in October and November Fresh season leaf gives the strongest stain
Drying Leaves dried in shade, not baked in sun Too much heat dulls the colour
Cleaning Stems, sand and twigs removed Grit ruins a body art paste
Milling Leaf ground to powder Finer grinding releases colour faster
Sieving Sifted once, twice or three times Triple sifted powder flows through a cone

The sieving step is where the grades split. Regular henna for hair is sifted to an even powder that mixes into a smooth paste, while body art quality henna is sifted again and again until it is fine enough to pipe through a cone tip without clogging. Our guide to BAQ henna and regular henna covers that choice in detail, including which grade suits which kind of buyer.

How to tell genuine Sojat henna

Buyer noteDo a stain test on every sample. Mix the powder with water, let it rest a few hours, then leave a dab on your palm for an hour. Good henna stains orange at first and darkens to a deep red brown over two days. A stain that is black at once, or smells of chemicals, means something has been added.
  • Colour of the powder: fresh henna is green, sometimes khaki. Brown powder is usually old.
  • Smell: earthy and grassy, like cut hay. A sharp chemical smell is a warning sign.
  • Feel: fine and smooth between the fingers, with no sand.
  • Paperwork: a supplier that mills in Sojat can show you the address, a lab report for the lot, and the mill itself on a video call.

Buying Sojat henna powder

A.R.T International is a henna powder manufacturer in Sojat. Our mill sits in the town, so the leaf we grind comes from this region and the lot you approve on the sample is the lot we ship. We supply body art quality and hair grades, natural and PPD free, from 50 kg, in bulk bags or in your own private label packs. Traders across India buy from us, and we export to the Gulf, Europe, the US and beyond from Mundra port. The same mill also makes indigo powder and neutral henna, so a hair colour range can ship on one order.
