Why some sidr powder is gritty
Three causes, and all of them are about the material rather than the method.
Coarse milling. Powder that has not been sieved fine enough never fully hydrates and stays as particles in the hair.
Stem content. Cheaper sidr carries twig and stem, which mill coarser than leaf and are the usual source of grit that will not rinse away. Leaf only is the specification that fixes this.
Old or badly dried stock. Sidr that has gone brown or grey has usually been sun dried or held too long. It hydrates poorly and has lost some of its slip.
Good sidr feels smooth going on and rinses clean. If it feels like wet sand, no amount of technique will rescue it.
How to judge a lot
Colour should be a clear green, not brown or grey. Smell should be mild and plant like. Texture should be fine and even, with no visible fibre.
The practical test is to make a paste. Good sidr hydrates within about ten minutes into something smooth and slippery. Poor sidr stays thin and gritty however long you leave it.

The second is that oil blunts the saponins. Adding oil makes a mask more conditioning and less cleansing, which is right for dry hair and wrong for an oily scalp. It is a real trade off rather than a free improvement.
