Indigo is grown across India, and also in parts of Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia. India is the largest source of the leaf powder used in hair care. The plant is a leguminous shrub that suits hot climates and poor soil, and only its leaf is used.
Where the crop is
India dominates supply of indigo leaf powder. Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and parts of central India all grow it, and the material used for cosmetics is largely milled in the same regions.
Outside India, indigo grows in West Africa, El Salvador and Guatemala, and across Southeast Asia. Much of that production goes to artisan textile dyeing rather than into the cosmetic powder trade, and a good deal of it is consumed close to where it is grown.
A question we hear often from buyers new to the category is where is indigo grown for hair colour specifically, and the answer is almost always India, because that is where the leaf powder supply chain and the cosmetic testing infrastructure both sit.
What the plant is like
Indigo is a leguminous shrub, growing to roughly one to two metres, with small compound leaves and modest pink or purple flowers. Being a legume, it fixes nitrogen, which is why it has a long history as a rotation crop that improves the soil it grows in.
It handles heat and poor ground well and needs moderate water. It is generally grown as an annual or short cycle crop and cut several times before replanting.
As with henna and senna, only one part is worth anything commercially. The dye precursor is in the leaf. Stem and stalk carry very little, and their presence in a finished powder is dilution.

Plants are cut rather than picked leaf by leaf, then the leaf is stripped once dry. The first cut is generally the best, and dye strength varies between cuts and seasons enough that it has to be measured per lot rather than assumed.
How growing conditions show up in the powder
Heat and sun during growth raise dye content in the leaf. Excess rain close to harvest lowers it. A wet season produces more leaf of lower strength, which is a real and recurring pattern rather than a supplier’s excuse.
This is why a buyer working to a fixed shade should be specifying dye content and requiring a per lot figure, rather than buying on origin alone. Origin is a reasonable starting filter. It is not a specification.
From field to cosmetic powder
The cosmetic route is short. Cut, shade dry, strip leaf from stem, clean, mill, sieve, test, pack. No fermentation, no precipitation, no solvent.
Shade drying is not optional. Sun degrades the leaf and shows up as a weaker, duller result on the head. Cleaning removes stem, grit and field debris, and how thoroughly it is done accounts for much of the difference between two lots at different prices.
Fineness is set at the sieve, and for hair use it matters more than people expect. A coarse powder makes a gritty paste that will not rinse cleanly out of thick hair.
Why origin claims deserve a second look
Indigo is bought and sold several times between field and finished pack, and a powder labelled with a country of origin has often been blended from more than one district.
That is not necessarily a problem. Blending is a legitimate way to hold a consistent dye figure across a season. It becomes a problem when the origin is presented as a quality guarantee while the actual strength is never stated.
The question worth asking a supplier is not only where it grew, but whether they mill it themselves and whether they can hold a stated dye figure across repeat shipments. Those two answers tell you far more than a district name.
