How Much Senna to Take

Get a bulk quote Email the export desk

For most adults the usual amount is 1 to 2 grams of dried senna leaf, or 3 to 6 whole pods, taken once in the evening. Products standardised for pharmacy use are commonly dosed at 15 to 30 mg of the active compounds per day. Take the smallest amount that works.

The question of how much senna leaves to use has an unsatisfying but honest answer: less than you think, and for a shorter time than you think.

The amounts people actually use

Form Usual adult amount Notes
Cut leaf, as tea 1 to 2 g, once daily Roughly a level teaspoon
Whole pods 3 to 6 pods, once daily Pod size varies a lot
Powder Considerably less by volume Milling removes the air, so a spoon holds more
Standardised tablets Per the label, evening Commonly 15 to 30 mg of actives daily
The switching trapDo not carry a spoon measure from cut leaf across to powder. A teaspoon of powder holds two to three times the leaf a teaspoon of cut material does, and that is the most common accidental overdose.

Why steeping time matters as much as the amount

With a tea, the amount of leaf is only half the dose. The other half is how long you steep it. A three minute steep and a fifteen minute steep from the identical teaspoon produce very different cups.

So the practical advice is to fix the leaf quantity and adjust the time, starting short. Full method in how to use senna leaves, and the pod version in how to use senna pods.

What the label figures mean

A pharmacy product states a milligram figure for the active compounds rather than a weight of leaf, because the leaf itself varies with crop and season. Two lots of the same weight can differ in strength by a wide margin.

That is why a standardised tablet is more predictable than a homemade tea, and why a supplement manufacturer blends against a tested figure for the actual lot rather than a brochure number. It is also why a cup of home brewed tea cannot be matched to a milligram figure with any confidence.

How long, which matters more than how much

Once daily, in the evening, for no more than about a week to two weeks without medical advice. Nearly every regulator and pharmacopoeia lands in that range.

The reason is not that senna is dangerous at normal amounts. It is that the bowel can adapt to it, so that stopping produces worse constipation than you started with. That mechanism is explained in whether senna is habit forming.

Signs you have taken too much

Cramping, urgency, watery stool and nausea. These usually mean the dose or the steep was too strong rather than that something is wrong.

Reduce it next time and drink water. Persistent diarrhoea matters more than discomfort, because fluid and potassium loss is the real risk with senna, not the bowel movement itself.

Amounts for other people

Children. Only on medical advice. Paediatric dosing is not a scaled down adult dose and should come from a doctor or pharmacist.

Older adults. Often start lower. Fluid loss and low potassium carry more consequence, and interactions with heart and blood pressure medicines matter more.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask a doctor. See who should not take senna and senna and women.

For manufacturers setting a dose

If you are formulating, the material is what makes a dose repeatable. Strength moves with crop and season, so a label claim has to be built against a tested figure for the lot in front of you. A supplier who quotes a range on a brochure and does not test per lot is asking you to carry that variation into your finished product.

Specifications, for buyers who order to a number

Manufacturers order senna on form, grade and strength. Strength is confirmed on the Certificate of Analysis for the specific lot rather than quoted as a range, because it is the number your dose calculation rests on. Send the figure you formulate to and we will confirm what we can supply against it before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How much senna leaf should I use per cup?

About 1 to 2 grams of dried cut leaf, roughly a level teaspoon, steeped 3 to 5 minutes. Start at the lower end and adjust the steeping time rather than the quantity.

How many senna pods equal a dose of leaf?

Three to six whole pods is the usual adult amount. Pods are stronger than leaves, so you need fewer, and pod size varies enough that the count is approximate.

How many days can I take senna?

Up to about one to two weeks without medical advice. Beyond that the bowel can adapt, so stopping causes worse constipation than you began with.

What happens if I take too much senna?

Cramping, urgency, watery stool and nausea. The risk that matters is fluid and potassium loss rather than the discomfort, so reduce it and drink water.

Is powder dosed the same as cut leaf?

No. By volume a spoon of powder holds much more leaf, so use considerably less. Weighing rather than spooning is the safer approach with powder.
