To use senna leaves for constipation, steep about 1 to 2 grams of dried leaf in hot water for 3 to 5 minutes, drink it in the evening, and expect it to work in 6 to 12 hours. Steeping time controls the dose more than the amount of leaf does.
That last point is the one almost every guide misses, and it is the reason people get cramping from a cup they thought was mild.
How to use senna leaves for constipation, step by step
Boil water and let it stand for a moment off the boil. Add the leaf. Cover the cup, because covering keeps the steam in and gives a more consistent result. Steep 3 to 5 minutes. Strain out the leaf.
Drink it in the evening. Senna works overnight, so an evening cup gives a morning result, which is what most people want.
Why steeping time is the real dose control
The active compounds come out of the leaf gradually. A three minute steep pulls out a fraction of what a fifteen minute steep does, from exactly the same leaf.
So two people using the identical quantity can get completely different effects. This is the practical difference between senna tea and a senna tablet: the tablet holds a measured dose, and the cup holds whatever you extracted.
| Steep | Typical result |
|---|---|
| 2 to 3 minutes | Mild, a reasonable first try |
| 4 to 5 minutes | Standard strength for most people |
| 10 minutes or more | Strong, and the usual cause of cramping |
| Overnight, cold | Gentler on the stomach, slower to act |
How much leaf
Around 1 to 2 grams of dried leaf per cup is the usual range, which is roughly a level teaspoon of cut leaf. If you are using powder rather than cut leaf, use considerably less: milling removes the air between the pieces, so a teaspoon of powder holds far more material. More on that in how much senna to take.
Cold steeping, if it upsets your stomach
Cover the leaf with cold water and leave it in the fridge overnight, then strain. Cold water pulls out less of the resin that irritates the stomach lining, so a cold steep is often easier to tolerate. It acts more slowly and more gently.
This is a common approach in traditional practice and it is worth trying before giving up on the leaf entirely.
What to pair it with
Fennel, peppermint or ginger. This is not folklore: commercial blends do it for a reason, which is that these soften the cramping senna alone can cause. A quarter teaspoon of fennel seed in the cup makes a real difference for most people.
Getting the timing right
Drink it in the evening, roughly two hours after eating. Drink water through the next day, because senna draws fluid into the bowel and the fluid has to come from somewhere.
Do not take it alongside other laxatives, and leave a gap of two hours either side of other medicines, since a faster transit time can reduce how much of them you absorb.
How long is too long
Use it when you need it rather than every night. The consistent guidance is not to use senna continuously beyond about two weeks without medical advice, because the bowel can become reliant on it. That is covered properly in whether senna is habit forming.
Senna is not suitable for everyone. Bowel obstruction, pregnancy, breastfeeding and several medical conditions all change the answer, and the full list is in who should not take senna. If constipation keeps returning, the cause is worth investigating rather than managing with a laxative indefinitely.
For manufacturers blending senna
If you are building a product rather than a cup, the cut decides everything. Fine cut is milled to flow through tea bag filling machines without dusting or blocking; a coarse grade will jam the line. And because the consumer controls the steep, the one variable you control is what goes in the bag, which means material tested lot by lot rather than a brochure figure.
Sourcing senna leaves
We grow, process and export senna leaves and senna pods from Sojat, Rajasthan, cutting tea grade in our own plant. More on the range on our senna manufacturer and exporter page. Minimum order 100 kg, Certificate of Analysis on every lot, free sample first and a quote back within 24 hours.
Specifications, for buyers who order to a number
Tea buyers order senna on cut fineness and on strength, with purity limits set by the destination market. Strength is confirmed on the Certificate of Analysis for the specific lot rather than quoted as a range, because it moves with crop and season and a consistent product has to be blended against the real figure.
Frequently asked questions
How do you use senna leaves for constipation?
Steep 1 to 2 grams of dried leaf in hot water for 3 to 5 minutes, covered, and drink it in the evening. It normally works within 6 to 12 hours.
How long should senna leaves steep?
Three to five minutes. Steeping time controls the strength more than the quantity of leaf does, and ten minutes or more is the usual cause of cramping.
Can you steep senna leaves in cold water?
Yes, overnight in the fridge. Cold steeping pulls out less of the compound that irritates the stomach, so it is gentler, and it acts more slowly.
When should I drink senna tea?
In the evening, about two hours after eating. It works overnight, so an evening cup produces a result the following morning.
Can I take senna leaves every day?
Not as a routine. Continuous use beyond roughly two weeks needs medical advice, because the bowel can begin to rely on it to work normally.
