Senna tea wholesale usually means one of two things: buying finished senna tea bags in bulk to resell, or buying senna leaf in bulk to make your own tea. Tea brands and packers almost always do the second, because buying the cut leaf direct and filling their own bags or pouches gives them control over the blend, the strength and the price.
Who buys senna for tea in bulk
Most bulk senna for tea goes to three kinds of buyer. Herbal tea brands blend it into detox and digestive teas, usually with milder herbs and flavours that soften its taste. Contract packers fill tea bags for brands that do not run their own machines. And herbal shops and online sellers pack loose leaf tea in pouches under their own label. Each of them needs the same thing from a supplier: the same leaf, cut the same way, from one order to the next.
Which cut a tea line needs
| Tea format | Cut to ask for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Machine filled tea bags | Fine cut | Small, even pieces flow through the filling machine |
| Pyramid or hand filled bags | Coarse cut | Larger pieces look better through the mesh |
| Loose leaf tea | Coarse cut or whole leaf | Customers expect to see the leaf |
| Instant mixes and capsules | Powder | Dissolves or fills evenly |
The cut is the detail most often missed on a first order. A packer who orders whole leaf for a tea bag machine has to cut it again, which costs time and creates dust, while a loose tea brand that orders a fine cut ends up with something that looks like dust in the pouch. Our guide to what goes into a senna tea bag covers the tea bag side in more detail.
What decides senna tea quality
For a tea, the buyer is judging the brew as much as the leaf. Well dried senna leaf is green to yellow green and brews a clear, golden liquor, while leaf that was dried too hot or stored too long turns brown and brews dull and bitter. Strength matters as well, because senna is a laxative, and a tea that is stronger than the last batch can cause real problems for the people drinking it. That is why serious tea buyers ask for a lab report on every lot, and why they want the strength held within a range rather than left to chance.
Blends and private label
Few brands sell senna on its own. It is usually blended with peppermint, ginger, fennel, liquorice or cinnamon, which soften the taste and make a more pleasant cup. Buying the senna and the other herbs from one supplier simplifies the blend, because the lots arrive together with matching paperwork. Brands that want to skip packing altogether can have the leaf filled into their own pouches or bags under private label.
Senna leaves or senna pods for tea?
Most teas use the leaf. Senna pods are generally stronger, and they are used in some traditional pod teas where a few pods are steeped in water, but they are harder to dose evenly in a bag. If you are building a tea range for the first time, starting with leaf is the simpler and more predictable choice. Our guide to senna leaves vs senna pods explains the difference.
