Henna for Hair: What It Actually Does, and What It Does Not

Henna does three things to hair. It stains it red, permanently. It binds to the outside of the strand, which makes hair feel thicker and look glossier. And it does all of that without ammonia, peroxide or PPD. What it does not do is lighten, condition deeply, or cure anything.

Most lists of henna for hair benefits mix those real effects with claims that fall apart under any scrutiny. It is worth separating the two, because the real ones are good enough to sell on.

The colour, and why it is permanent

Henna is a leaf powder. Mixed with something mildly acidic and left to stand, it releases a dye that grips the protein in hair and holds. That grip is what makes it permanent. It does not wash out the way a semi-permanent rinse does. It grows out, and it fades slowly, but you cannot strip it with shampoo.

The colour it gives is red. On dark brown or black hair that reads as a warm glint in sunlight rather than an obvious change. On mid brown it is auburn. On blonde or grey it is bright copper, because there is little or no pigment underneath to tone it down.

It is translucent, so it always combines with what is already there. Two people using the same batch get two different results. That is the nature of the material, not a quality problem.

The thickness and shine, and what actually causes them

This is the benefit people notice most and describe least accurately. Henna is not a conditioner and it does not repair damage.

What it does is coat. The dye binds along the outside of each strand and builds up a thin layer. That layer adds a small amount of physical bulk, which is why fine hair often feels noticeably thicker after two or three applications. It also smooths the cuticle so it lies flatter, and a flatter cuticle reflects more light. That is the shine.

The same coating is why henna-treated hair can feel stiffer or drier at first, especially on curly hair. It is a coating, not a moisturiser. Most people offset it by adding oil to the paste or using a conditioner afterwards.

Buyer noteThe coating effect is also why henna and chemical services fight each other. A relaxer, perm or bleach applied over a heavy henna build-up gives unpredictable results. Retail lines should say so on the pack.

Scalp and dandruff claims

Henna has been used on the scalp for centuries across India, North Africa and the Gulf, and it is genuinely cooling and mildly astringent. Users commonly report less flaking and a calmer scalp.

We will not go further than that. There is no good clinical evidence that henna treats dandruff as a medical condition, and a supplement or cosmetic brand that puts a treatment claim on a pack is inviting a regulatory problem in the EU and the US. Describe it as a cleansing and colouring ingredient with a long traditional history, which is defensible everywhere.

What henna cannot do

  • Lighten. There is no bleach step. Hair goes darker or warmer, never lighter.
  • Give brown or black on its own. That needs indigo over the top as a second step.
  • Give an ash or cool tone. The dye is warm. There is no way around it.
  • Come out easily. Removal is difficult and usually damaging. Treat it as a commitment.

What separates good henna from filler

Henna is cheap to adulterate and the difference is invisible in the sack. Four things decide whether a lot performs.

What to check Why it matters
Dye strength Sets how deep the colour goes. Falls as stock ages
Crop year Old material gives weak, uneven colour
Sieve or mesh Fine milling means smooth paste and easy rinsing
PPD and metallic salts Should be tested for and absent. Both are added to fake a darker result

Body art quality is the top grade. It means finely sifted, high in dye strength and clean enough to sit on skin for hours. It is what tattoo artists buy, and it is the grade most cosmetic brands should be specifying too.

Buying henna in bulk

We grow, mill and export henna powder from Sojat in Rajasthan. Sojat is where most of the world’s cosmetic grade henna comes from, and it is where our own processing sits, so this is a line we control rather than one we buy in and resell.

We supply body art quality and standard cosmetic grades. Minimum order is 50 kg. Every lot carries a Certificate of Analysis covering dye strength, sieve, microbial limits and heavy metals, with PPD tested and absent. Free sample before you order, quote back within 24 hours, and we ship to buyers in more than 60 countries. If you also need brown and black shades, indigo is the second half of that and we mill it in the same plant.

Specifications, for buyers who order to a number

Henna is ordered on dye strength and sieve size. Both are stated on the Certificate of Analysis for your lot rather than as a brochure figure, because both move with the crop and the milling. Send us the figures your formulation is written against and we will confirm what we can hold against them before you commit to a container.

Frequently asked questions

Does henna actually make hair thicker?

It makes each strand slightly thicker by coating it, and it smooths the cuticle so hair reflects more light. It does not grow new hair. Fine hair usually shows the effect most clearly after two or three applications.

Is henna good for your hair or damaging?

It is not damaging in the way bleach is, because it does not open the cuticle or strip pigment. Some people find it drying, since it coats rather than moisturises. Adding oil to the paste or conditioning afterwards handles that.

Can henna be removed?

Not easily. It binds to hair protein and is effectively permanent. It fades and grows out. Any removal method strong enough to strip it will usually damage the hair, so it is best treated as a long term decision.

What is body art quality henna?

The top grade: finely sifted, high dye strength and clean enough for skin contact over several hours. Tattoo artists buy it, and it is the grade most cosmetic brands should specify.

What is the minimum order for bulk henna powder?

50 kg. Tell us the grade, sieve and destination country and we will send a free sample and a quote within 24 hours.
