Dried fruit, powder, extract and spray dried
Amla is bought in four quite different shapes and the choice is usually driven by what happens to it next. Dried fruit goes to buyers who process further or who sell it as is. Powder is the workhorse for hair care, Ayurvedic formulation and food. Extract goes to nutraceutical brands buying the actives. Spray dried and freeze dried are for buyers who need the vitamin C to survive a process that would otherwise destroy it, and they cost accordingly. Why processing decides what survives
Amla is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, at roughly 600 to 900mg per 100g on a dry basis, alongside gallic acid, ellagic acid and tannins. Vitamin C is heat sensitive, which is the whole reason freeze dried and spray dried grades exist and command a premium. A buyer who intends to make a vitamin C claim should specify the grade on that basis rather than on price, and should tell us the claim, because the number you need on the label determines which grade can carry it.
Hair care, Triphala and nutraceuticals
Amla is a core ingredient of Triphala alongside harad and baheda, and buyers formulating that blend usually take all three from one desk so the lots are consistent. Separately it is a staple of the Ayurvedic hair-care category, where it is often paired with bhringraj and shikakai. Nutraceutical buyers take the extract.
