Psyllium husk relieves constipation by absorbing water and forming a gel, which makes stool softer and bulkier so the bowel moves it along. It usually works in 12 to 72 hours, not overnight. Unlike a stimulant laxative it is safe to take every day, indefinitely.
How it works, and why that matters
Psyllium is the husk of a small seed. It is almost entirely soluble fibre, and it holds many times its own weight in water.
Swallowed with enough liquid, it passes through undigested and turns to gel in the gut. That gel does two things at once. It adds bulk, which is what triggers the bowel to contract normally. And it holds water in the stool so it stays soft instead of drying out.
This is a completely different mechanism from senna or bisacodyl. Those are stimulants: they irritate the colon wall to force a contraction. Psyllium does not force anything. It gives the bowel something normal to work with, which is why it does not create dependence and why guidance does not cap how long you can use it.
Using psyllium husk for constipation
Start low. One teaspoon, about 5 grams, once a day, stirred into a full glass of water and drunk immediately before it thickens. Follow it with a second glass.
Build up over a week or two to two or three doses a day if you need them. Clinical trials generally use 5 to 15 grams daily, split across doses and taken with meals.
Then wait. Psyllium is not a same-night fix. Most people see a change within 12 to 72 hours, and the full effect takes several days as the gut adjusts. Someone expecting overnight relief will conclude it failed on day one.
Psyllium or senna: which do you actually need?
They solve different problems and the choice is straightforward once you see it that way.
| Psyllium husk | Senna | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Bulk forming fibre | Stimulant laxative |
| Speed | 12 to 72 hours | 6 to 12 hours |
| Long term use | Safe indefinitely | About two weeks maximum |
| Dependence risk | None | Real with prolonged use |
| Best for | Ongoing regularity | Occasional, needs a definite result |
If the problem is a one off and you want it resolved by morning, senna is the tool. If the problem is that you are constipated most weeks, psyllium is the better answer and it is the one you can stay on.
It also works the other way
Worth knowing because it sounds contradictory: psyllium helps diarrhoea too. The same gel that softens hard stool absorbs excess water in loose stool and firms it up. It normalises rather than pushing in one direction.
That is part of why psyllium has the strongest evidence of any fibre for irritable bowel syndrome, where people swing between both.
Side effects, and how to avoid most of them
Bloating, gas and cramping are the common ones, and they are usually the result of starting at too high a dose. The gut needs a week or two to adjust to a large increase in fibre. Ramping up slowly prevents most of it.
Psyllium can also slow the absorption of some medicines, so the standard advice is to take it at least two hours apart from anything else. Anyone with a history of bowel obstruction, difficulty swallowing, or a narrowed oesophagus should speak to a doctor before starting.
What manufacturers should know about grades
Psyllium is sold on purity, and the number refers to how much of the material is husk rather than seed and residue. It is the specification that decides both performance and price.
- 85% husk. The general grade, used in bulk food and animal feed applications.
- 95% husk. The common supplement grade. Cleaner, better gel strength.
- 99% husk. The premium grade, for pharmaceutical and top-tier supplement lines.
Beyond purity, buyers specify swell volume, which is the practical measure of how much gel a given weight produces, plus mesh, moisture, and microbial and pesticide limits to the standard of the destination market.
Sourcing psyllium husk in bulk
We export psyllium husk from India, which supplies the overwhelming majority of the world’s crop, in 85%, 95% and 99% husk grades plus seed powder and whole seed. Minimum order is 100 kg.
Every lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis covering purity, swell volume, moisture and microbial limits. Free sample before you order so you can test gel performance in your own formulation, and a quote back within 24 hours to your port. We ship to supplement manufacturers, pharmaceutical formulators and food brands in more than 60 countries.
Specifications, for buyers who order to a number
Psyllium is ordered on husk purity, swell volume and mesh, with moisture, microbial and pesticide limits set by your destination market. All are confirmed on the Certificate of Analysis for the lot you receive rather than quoted as a brochure range, because purity and swell both move with crop and processing. Send the figures your formulation is written against and we will confirm what we can hold to before you order.
Frequently asked questions
How long does psyllium husk take to work for constipation?
Usually 12 to 72 hours, with the full effect after several days as the gut adjusts. It is not an overnight fix. If you need relief by morning, a stimulant laxative is the different tool for that job.
Can I take psyllium husk every day?
Yes. It is a bulk forming fibre, not a stimulant, so it does not cause dependence and there is no two week limit the way there is with senna. Daily long term use is the normal way to use it.
How much water do I need with psyllium?
At least a full glass, around 240 ml, per dose, plus more through the day. This is not optional advice. Taken with too little liquid psyllium can swell and cause choking or a blockage, which is the only serious documented risk.
Why is psyllium making me bloated?
Almost always because the dose went up too fast. Start at about 5 grams a day and build over a week or two. Bloating and gas usually settle once the gut has adjusted.
What purity grade of psyllium husk should I buy?
95% is the usual supplement grade and 99% the pharmaceutical grade; 85% suits bulk food and feed. We supply all three at a 100 kg minimum, with a free sample so you can test gel performance first.
Specs change with the crop, the season and the grade. Ask our export desk for a current lab report, the minimum order and a price to your port, and we will come back within 24 hours.
