Stir one teaspoon of psyllium husk into a full glass of water, drink it immediately before it thickens, then drink a second glass. Start once a day and build up over a week or two. The water is not optional: taken dry, psyllium can swell in the throat and cause choking.
How to take psyllium husk, step by step
Measure. One level teaspoon is roughly 5 grams. That is the right starting dose for almost everyone, regardless of what the tub suggests.
Mix into at least 240 ml of water. Stir briskly. Plain water is easiest; juice works but thickens faster.
Drink it straight away. Psyllium starts gelling within about a minute and becomes unpleasant to swallow shortly after. This is the step people get wrong, and then decide they dislike psyllium.
Follow with a second glass of water. The husk needs liquid to work with once it is down.
Build up slowly. Stay at one dose a day for several days, then add a second, then a third if you need it. Most trials use 5 to 15 grams a day in total.
When to take it
It depends what you want from it, and the timing genuinely changes the result.
| Goal | When |
|---|---|
| Regularity | Any consistent time. Many prefer evening |
| Appetite and fullness | 20 to 30 minutes before a meal |
| Blood sugar after eating | Just before or with the meal |
| Cholesterol | Split across meals, 10 to 12 g a day total |
Keep at least two hours between psyllium and any medication. The gel can slow how quickly other things are absorbed, which matters for anything you take on a schedule.
Powder, capsules or whole husk
Whole husk is the flaky form. Cheapest per dose, most effective per gram, and the one that needs mixing.
Powder is milled finer, mixes more smoothly and thickens faster still, so drink it quicker.
Capsules are convenient and the trade-off is quantity: a 5 gram dose is a lot of capsules, often eight or more. People underdose badly on capsules without realising. If you use them, count what you are actually getting and drink the full glass regardless.
What to expect, and when
Psyllium is not fast. Most people notice a change in 12 to 72 hours and the full effect settles over about a week as the gut adjusts.
Bloating and gas in the first week are common and almost always mean the dose went up too quickly. Drop back a step, hold there for a few days, then try again. It usually settles.
If nothing has changed after a week at a reasonable dose with plenty of fluid, more psyllium is not the answer and the constipation is worth getting looked at.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Anyone with difficulty swallowing or a narrowed oesophagus
- Anyone with a history of bowel obstruction or bowel surgery
- Anyone on medication timed precisely, particularly for thyroid, diabetes or seizures
- Anyone who has had an allergic reaction to psyllium, which is uncommon but real
Grades, if you are buying it to make something
Psyllium trades on purity, meaning the proportion that is genuine husk rather than seed fragments and residue: 85% for bulk food and feed, 95% for supplements, 99% for pharmaceutical use.
The figure that predicts real behaviour is swell volume, which measures how much gel a fixed weight produces. Two lots at the same nominal purity can differ, and for a product dosed to an effect that is the number to specify. Ask for it on your lot, not on the product line.
Sourcing psyllium husk in bulk
We export psyllium husk from India, source of most of the world crop, in 85%, 95% and 99% husk grades plus seed powder and whole seed. Minimum order is 100 kg.
Certificate of Analysis on every lot covering purity, swell volume, moisture and microbial limits. Free sample first, because gel speed is something you have to feel in your own formulation rather than read off a sheet, and a quote back within 24 hours to your port.
Specifications, for buyers who order to a number
Order on husk purity, swell volume and mesh, with moisture, microbial and pesticide limits to your destination market’s standard. Every figure is confirmed on the Certificate of Analysis for the lot you receive rather than quoted as a range, because purity and swell both move with crop and processing.
Frequently asked questions
How do you take psyllium husk properly?
One teaspoon, about 5 grams, stirred into a full glass of water and drunk immediately before it thickens, followed by a second glass. Start once daily and build up over a week or two.
How much water do I need with psyllium husk?
At least 240 ml per dose, plus more through the day. This is a safety requirement, not a preference. Taken with too little liquid psyllium can swell and cause choking or a blockage.
Should I take psyllium in the morning or at night?
For regularity, whichever you will keep doing. For appetite, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. For blood sugar, with the meal. Consistency matters more than the clock.
Why does psyllium make me gassy?
Usually because the dose rose too fast. Fibre needs a week or two of adjustment. Step back down, hold, then increase more slowly and it typically settles.
Do you supply psyllium husk to manufacturers?
Yes, in 85%, 95% and 99% husk grades, 100 kg minimum, with a Certificate of Analysis per lot. Free sample and a quote within 24 hours.
Specs change with the crop, the season and the grade. Ask our export desk for a current lab report, the minimum order and a price to your port, and we will come back within 24 hours.
