Who sources this ingredient
Whole seed, cold-pressed oil, powder and extract
Black seed is sold in four shapes with four different buyers. Whole seed goes to spice and bakery buyers, and to formulators who press or extract themselves. Cold-pressed oil is the largest supplement category and is where the thymoquinone conversation usually happens. Powder goes into capsules and blends. Standardised extract goes to formulators buying a specified marker level. Tell us which, because a price quoted on seed tells a buyer who actually wanted oil almost nothing useful.
The marker, and why we report it on an oil basis
Thymoquinone is the compound black seed is bought on, and it is reported on the COA on an oil basis, which is the meaningful way to state it. Buyers new to the ingredient sometimes ask for a thymoquinone percentage on whole seed, which is not a figure that carries useful information. If you are formulating to a standardised level, send the target and the assay method and we will confirm against it before quoting rather than after.
Kalonji, Nigella sativa, and the names it is not
Black seed trades under several names and two of them cause real ordering mistakes. Kalonji is the same thing: Nigella sativa. Black cumin is sometimes used for it and sometimes for a different plant entirely, and black sesame is not related at all. We quote against the binomial for that reason. If a specification you have been sent says black cumin, send it to us and we will confirm which plant is meant before anything ships.
