Who sources this ingredient
Spearmint or peppermint, decided before anything else
These are two different plants sold under one English word, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake on a first mint order. Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is the menthol-forward leaf: cooling, sharp, and what oral-care, confectionery and pharmaceutical buyers mean when they say mint. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is sweeter and rounder with very little menthol, and it is what most herbal tea blends actually want. We supply both and will send a sample of each if you are not certain, which is cheaper than finding out after a container has landed.
Whole leaf for tea, powder for formulation
Whole leaf and coarse cut go to tea blenders, where the visible leaf is part of what the customer is buying and the cut has to match the rest of the blend so it does not separate in the bag. Crushed and powder go to formulators who need the leaf to disperse rather than be seen: capsules, oral-care pastes, seasoning blends. The cut is specified on the order and held lot to lot, which is the part that matters when you are on your fourth shipment and the blend has to look identical.
Why moisture is the specification to watch
Dried mint is bought on aroma, and aroma is lost to moisture and to heat. We hold moisture at or below 10% and pack into PP bags or fibre drums for the voyage. Shelf life is stated at 1 year, which is shorter than most of our catalog and is honest rather than conservative: mint fades. Buyers who store for longer than a season should talk to us about split shipments instead, so the leaf reaching your line is from a recent crop.
