Piper longum, and why it is bought
Long pepper, pippali, is a different species from black pepper and is bought for different reasons. It carries piperine along with piperlongumine, and it is a component of the classical Trikatu formulation alongside black pepper and ginger. Supplement formulators take it for the piperine; Ayurvedic manufacturers take it for the traditional formula. It is not a culinary substitute for black pepper and buyers who order it as one are usually disappointed.
Whole pods, pod powder and extract
Whole pods go to Ayurvedic and traditional manufacturers who process themselves. Pod powder is milled to a specified mesh. Extract goes to supplement formulators buying piperine at a stated strength.
